Why Blacks Keep Quiet About Obama

Except that’s precisely the sentiment that underlies white race fear.” Read Kevin Gray’s compelling report in the new edition of our subscriber-only newsletter. A Friend of Women?

My Bill Clinton ... and Ours

By HOP WECHSLER

Four years ago I was abusive towards a woman I loved-- mentally, as opposed to physically, but dark energy is dark energy. Her revenge on me was writing an ethereal tale of lesbian lust, titled after her own middle name and published under my name in a book of literary smut.

Her revenge was an expose of my own hypocrisy: I was nominally a left-wing radical feminist, yet I was treating her as a degraded object. Why not use my name towards the end of women loving women, in a world without the taint of men?

How exactly does this relate to Bill Clinton? Like the old me, the old Clinton was nominally a supporter of left causes, a friend of Blacks and women. His dysfunctional family history made him a sympathetic, understanding and understandable figure. As Wendy Kaminer wrote in Salon, "Considering his abusive, alcoholic stepfather, his substance abusing brother, his mother's penchant for gambling, and his own compulsive eating and alleged womanizing, Clinton's family looked like a case study in a codependency book."

Yet the candidate and later President Clinton wasted this sympathy because of his own addictions: power and women. A friend of Blacks? He executed a mentally retarded black man to defeat the perception of Democrats as soft on crime. He denounced Sister Souljah for her frustrated reaction to the LA Riots in order to distance himself from Jesse Jackson. Within his own administration, he fired Joycelyn Elders and refused to defend Lani Guinier for his own political gain.

A friend of women? Ask Sister Souljah, Elders, or Guinier, or more importantly any of the women he used and abused towards his own addictive ends (even the late Gerald Ford told a reporter, "He's sick-- he's got an addiction. He needs treatment"). Sex addiction is serious and tragic-- according to one source, 97 percent of sex addicts experienced emotional abuse in childhood, 83 percent sexual abuse, and 72 percent physical abuse-- but refusing to treat it while victimizing others (or bombing Sudan as a distraction) is even more serious.

Hillary never wrote a book under her husband's name to expose and embarrass him. She never needed to. He did it himself-- ask any Black voter in 2008.

HOP WECHSLER is a writer and publisher based in Philadelphia.
