Lawn Poem
by ANDREW RODMAN
i think i can
never surpass
a poem as lovely as the grass
on whose quivering blades ride
drops of dew that merge and slide
into the a mat so fresh so complete
velvet green that kisses the feet
a mat for lovers
to wander the day
a sward where the dragonfly and ladybug play
green acres bequile the eye
cool vistas to joyfully espy
far afield
the meadows and dale
an inch is rising
bud and scale
a greening a hobbing
a rewilding a throbbing
all gods green
youthful earth
full of joy and tender mirth
a buzzing of bees, bugs flying where they please
this is the chorus of spring
sung by multitudes of grasses
that wave and sway like the earth's own eyelashes
and let us
sing the flavors of spring
spring sprung springy sprang sprout spronge
spur rrrr rrrr
alack, there
is no spur nor cur in this word
then why is there a rrrr and a mmmmmm and a grrrrrrr
rising from
the dell and glade abound
the rrr and grrrrr and mmmmmmm aloud they sound
This is not a buzzy tongue of flighty waspers
nor the rubbing of legs under grasshoppers
this is the
sound of engines abhored
the sound that mmmmmms untoward
slyvan pastoral interruptus
yanked alive by a whipping pull cord
John Deere Honda Toro
shave the inch the face the beard
five o clock shadow
the scraggly the feared
put order into the grid
see the grass
a growing
and i want to cut it cut it down
bout and inch or more is showing
so i cut it cut it down
we dont want
that grass a growing
that weedy habitat
to sprout in tangles and grow in spangles fertile habitat
see the grass
a growing
and i want to cut it cut it down
bout and inch or more is showing
so i cut it cut it down
unruly wild
and free
to splatter the grid
so i clap the lid
i cut it cut it down
cut it down
nip it in the bud
whack them attack em
Grass roots are strong
you dont want to see what whats coming along
Give em an inch and theyll come for your daughters
cut it down cut it shorter
i am a proud
pioneer taming the prairie
lest it become woodland
home to elfs and fairies
if its not kept shaved
things are gonna get hairy
so i cut and whack
i hack it back
i cut it cut it down
i am a mofo
mower
i cut it cut it down
anarchism,
hippies at play
bugs and critters
pushing thru
the pavement crack
flowers rally for attack
they want to take my yard back
so i mow and whack
i cut it back
i cut it cut it down
