Dubya's gonna be Commander and Chief for three more years of threatening Syria and murdering the environment while looting the economy. He can be reached at: stewa@aol.com   Certainly Alien Rights by ADAM ENGEL Because this is a "poem" of sorts and not a novel or a book on sports, music, or movie stars, it's not the least bit useful to "the market," that rough beast who decides which artifacts are "good" or "bad," what to be sold, what freely had, that is, "worthless," in this time and place, where value equals a familiar face or brand, and unknown, faceless masses might as well be toilette paper, for even arses of Elites must be wiped, time to time, (this very poem, penned in archaic rhyme so you'd know it was a poem, might be of use, if printed, and valuable, like paper on which money's minted, for it's still impossible to wipe one's arse with kilo-bytes though the Privileged do have "certainly alien rights," so who can say?) Anyway, I've often myself wondered who or what it was so irredeemably blundered into this whole "poetry is dead and buried" thing. Millions who memorize lyrics corporate warblers sing prefer clumsy, clunky pages stacked like plates to half a dozen lines by Stevens, Ashbery or Yeats. Most readers would rather a soap-operatic tome of prose thick as the Decline and Fall of Rome (though not as comic, tragic, lusty or plain fun as folly done and done again under a smirking sun) to even a single sonorous, if enigmatic, line of all that's "past, passing and to come" in time. "It all boils down" to marketing and image (like using that old sailor to sell spinach) Though this White House was built upon the "word" (Bible, Constitution, Pledge was all I heard at school, before I stumbled upon better books, despite my classmates' scornful looks and "saw" music in characters and signs) perhaps if we referred to all writing as "lines" instead of "fiction-non-fiction," "prose-or-verse" and threw our selves, mind-body-all, before the hearse that's carting off the culture no world market bears to kindle bonfires of over-bright World Fairs, lines might be rescued from the ruins of jingles, sound-bytes, top ten tunes, and readers exposed to "music" in the letter will read for real, the more for real, the better.
