Weekend Edition August 14 / 15, 2004   Aftermath, September 11, 2001 By FRANCES PAYNE ADLER In the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, and the death of 3,000 of our sisters and brothers, words left me. I wrote just the first few lines of this poem, read it at a peace vigil a few days later. With our bombing of Afghanistan and no news of Afghani casualties, I searched for the math, the numbers of dead caused by our foreign policies. It was a time of silence, weeks of reading and listening and learning. "We are more powerful out of the flesh than in." - Lucille Clifton I. Where am I when two hijacked planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center? Way out here on the west coast, inside the television, finding it hard to breathe in concrete dust, and as the hours grow and the rubble grows and the dead grow, I am down on my knees, scrubbing the kitchen floor In New York, an attorney runs down eighty flights of tower stairs, through fallen pilings, steel swords, shards of glass. Concrete dust burns his eyes. Keep your damn war over there, he says, this is not my war II. Not my war, and I'm inside the television, the murdered dead are everywhere, the walls are peeling and I am an emergency room nurse again, doing triage, counting the dead, only this time, I am listening to their voices erupting like small gas leaks, they are talking to each other, the dead, across walls, across language, we are more powerful out of the flesh than in they are saying, talking to each other, counting I am inside the tunnel of voices inside the television. More than concrete walls are falling, the pipelines are open, news plugged up for years, a river flooding the floor, not my war, the dead dragging their lives behind them more powerful the dead from the Trade Towers, from the Pentagon, from a field in Pennsylvania, talking to the dead coming in from Iraq, the West Bank, Tel Aviv, from Guatemala, El Salvador ­ even my own murdered dead from Seredna, Russia, from Lodz, in Poland, enough, they are saying, this is not my war Voices calling home from the skies of New York, counting themselves, three thousand of us sliding, and through cables underwater Iraqi voices calling, counting, one million of us dead, and 5,000 more dying each month, your extinguishing sanctions, the dead, their voices, how many from Gaza, the West Bank, from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, they are counting the bullets made in Pennsylvania, not my war Voices from Chile, counting, marking each others' brows, nights, the CIA-backed coup we are more than whispers of the democratically-elected Allende government we are 30,000 dead people and we are hungry, not my war, voices from the seething hills of El Salvador, U.S.-backed death squads fill the eyes of El Mozote we are 70,000 people. Voices, erupting from the blood hills of Nicaragua, down the pipelines from U.S.-sponsored contra wars, we are 30,000 dead. Not my war, in Guatemala we are 150,000 killed and 50,000 disappeared in the 1954 CIA-sponsored-fruit-company coup; not my war, two million of us killed in Vietnam; and 200,000 of us dead in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the cries Enola Gay and Fat Boy couldn't hear Not my war, we are voices lost in the U.S.- backed house in Saudi Arabia, the apartheid regime in South Africa, Suharto's dictatorship in Indonesia, Marcos in the Philippines, and Israel's occupations of Lebanon, the Golan Heights, Gaza. Not my war, in the name of 'national interests,' in the name of oil and coffee and guns and fruit, in whose interests, the dead are saying, your leaders have trained death squads, assassinated politicians, not my war, treated us as entirely expendable III. Not my war that our foreign policy, that makes our country a target of terrorism, is a mirror to our domestic policy -- not my war, expendable, that we put in prison one in four African American youths, expendable, that we deny health care to 43 million people, expendable, that we cut women cut children from welfare and don't track what happens to those who don't find jobs, expendable, that we ignore three million homeless people who live on the streets and don't count them among the unemployed, expendable, that we deny education to how many million youths, not my war that, in the aftermath of the Trade Towers, we steal billions, bloodlet their health and education and shelter, use it for fighter planes and bombs and missile defense, not my war that, in the aftermath, we kidnap the love pouring out between us, spill it into flags and guns in service to the so-called war Where am I when two hijacked planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center? Way out here on the west coast, inside the television, and I know why I don't know these stories, not flashed over and over on the screens, I know in which rooms in which cities the decisions, expendable, were made to censor how many killings from the news, I know the names of our arms dealers and oil dealers and fruit dealers, making a killing from these killings You who sit around tables in those rooms, you who make the decisions to go to war, the blood will not disappear. The cries do not go away. Years of wandering underground, your dead have found you, I have found you. I am Lana Weisman from Seredna killed, I am Etta Weisman from Lodz killed. I am Menachem Adlersberg from Chernovitz killed.We are told these dead are not related. It has taken all of their selves to bring me to this moment. And we are just one river. Or so some would say as they pray every day for a graceful and greater and much brighter day, the one that's still yet but a short ways away where it's more than enough, yes--a good workday's pay. Others speak naught but of gloom upon gloom Even today as they speedbuild our doom into a monster they would hoist now to loom over their draining our once wondrous boom --Oh, big secret!-- down to deep pockets in closed off back rooms. The risk taken now that can set us all free is whether or not we have eyes now to see the difference between those few corrupt and all We, (betrayers fundamental dressed up as mad sheep which faith looks beyond and can laugh and not weep) between valor and stealing elections with glee, the lies money buys or our Reason to Be. How long to fight evil with teeth, nails and claws only to see it emerge with new paws? To seek what we want and let go all the rest, that is our truest and ulimate test. There's no other way than embracing the wrong if we'd have the sweet Peace that we've yearned for so long. To take those war gargoyles straight into our hearts and wish them the best--in some far away parts-- to speak and to think and act only of this, the knowledge of our journey's complete and pure bliss, to scrape shattered bits of our past--treasured pearl-- and, delighted, shape from them an awesome new World.
