Command to Angels

Iqbal
was a poet-philosopher born in what is now Pakistan. His poetical works
in Urdu and Persian easily earn him the title to the greatest poet in
each of these languages in the twentieth century.
Marshall
the meek of my world. Arise, set them free.
Seize
the towers of the rich. Rock the tyrannies.
Lift the slaves: ignite them. Instill a faith that rocks.
Teach the feeble sparrow to fight the taloned hawk.
Power belongs to the people; their kingdom has come.
Burn the banners of tyranny; their history is done.
Why do the toiling peasants reap death and misery?
Capture the granite castles. Seize the granaries.
Why do they disconnect the worshippers from me?
I do not need pastors to parse my words for me.
I have no use for gilded walls and ornamented frieze.
Build me a tabernacle with mud, thatch and leaves.
This age of smokes and mirrors: is this modernity?
Move the poet: make him rage. Hitch him to Eternity.

By the raw redness of your jingoism. You may find
A flag tattooed on your forehead or on your chest.
Don’t talk about victory. The words that tumble
From your mouth will be irretrievable.
Your children will know how you exalted in death.
Don’t mourn the loss of your freedoms. Remember,
Orwell warned you that this day would come.
Your freedoms were not meant to last forever.
Don’t become disoriented or lose your bearings
As our Little Fool is transfigured into Big Brother.
He is there for you and you for him.
Don’t allow yourself to think about another world
For that would demand your resistance. Remember,
You were silent as Orwell’s world took seed and grew thorns.
Don’t be alarmed when you read reports from the battlefield
As we follow the flag from country to country. Remember,
War is glorious for those who wear the polished black boot.

in tribute to Ray Charles
who has honored death with a personal appearance.
Charles came my way in Spain
in 1963
outside a southern beach paella place
there was this local kid playing a Ray Charles tape
day after day
Georgia On His Mind
a song of exile and alienation
dreaming of the kingdom's comeback.
Zion!
I converted to that religion
watching it destroy Franco
who might make a surprise visit
to Alicante
but the kid just didn't move or care
El Caudillo sucked
he had Ray Charles
so did I.
