I have a red phone ringing in my head The firemen are hosing up the dead. The politicians promised all that they had, But what truth is in a television ad? The red phone now is ringing in your head You are in charge of what is being said. Your generation is a video game away Playing a nuclear laser death ray. In the abyss below the high granite cliff of the Wall I encountered Glenn Andreotta Etched a quarter inch deep in black granite. Who with the force of tigers Confronted Charlie Company. He was with the dying 407th that day in 68 The melee of My Lai The blood of 407 children, women and old people While the strong worked in the paddies The weaker villagers fell prey to Tiger Force. Glenn and Hugh and Larry Hovered, standing by to help warriors Beheld, instead, A cowardly slaughtering-field of Empire. Lucifer's shock troops were Bloodily blitzkreiging platoons of innocents Counter-attacking legions of toothless old cripples Enfilading squads of unarmed mothers Capturing in the salient of such American valor Beggared, newly-orphaned children. Hugh told Glenn and Larry To aim 1500 rounds per minute Of machine-gun justice On Calley's blood-sated troops Prompting Tiger's farce sudden reconsideration Of the limits of mortality. Bought enough time for two more choppers To lift 12 villagers away Moving their lives' tragedies inside. Three weeks later, Glenn died Another chopper, an accident. Cursed by the army he fought to save His heroic story Concealed by a young Colin Powell Eager for promotion Who knew that in this man's army The truth is ever inconvenient Prone to get in the way Of a good commendation. Glenn Andreotta died a hero of the people While Colin lives on A thousand My Lais later Incurious at whom he might encounter On Glenn's side of the Wall. Terry Lodge can be reached at: tjlodge50@yahoo.com Note: Glenn Andreotta was a machine gunner on a U.S. Army chopper that descended into the chaotic mass murder of hundreds of Vietnamese peasants at My Lai on March 16, 1968 at the hands of the U.S. Army. Andreotta's crew chief, Hugh Thompson, ordered Andreotta to fire on Lt. William Calley's Army platoon if they interfered with Thompson's plan to rescue a dozen Vietnamese villagers. Thompson succeeded in the rescue when Calley's troops hesitated when Andreotta aimed his machine gun at them. Andreotta died a few weeks later in a helicopter crash, an unrecognized American hero.
